Baptism

what is baptism and Why Do we RECEIVE it?

Baptism, as with all of the sacraments, is a visible and outward sign. It is an efficacious sign that seals us as belonging to Christ as His adopted sons and daughters. It unites us as Christians and makes us members of the Body of Christ. As the Catechism states, baptism symbolizes the "burial into Christ's death, from which [we rise] up by resurrection with him, as a new creature." (CCC, 1214). In other words, it is through baptism that we are reborn into a new life and washed clean of original sin. Baptism is a sacrament that is necessary for salvation. As Christ tells us in John 3:5, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God."
